Gly-Pro-Glu (GPE) is a neuroactive peptide. It prevents the binding of glutamate to the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. It positively regulates the release of acetylcholine mediated by potassium and thus participates in the control of brain functions. It improves signaling to muscles and muscle activation. Gly-Pro-Glu is neuroprotective after central administration in animal models of neurodegenerative processes, such as Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s diseases and various animal models of acute brain injury. The neuroprotective activity is not linked to its affinity for the glutamate receptor. Results indicate that GPE mimics the effects of insulin-like growth factor I on the somatostatin system
